Small vs full-size utility trailers

A small utility trailer (roughly 4x8 to 5x8, single axle) handles mowers, a couple of ATVs, dump runs, and light hauling — easy to tow, store, and back up. If most of your loads are light and occasional, a small trailer for sale is usually the right, cheapest answer.

Step up to 6x12 or 7x16 when you're carrying garden tractors, side-by-sides, or landscaping loads regularly. Bigger decks and higher ratings cost more and need more tow vehicle, so size to the heaviest thing you'll realistically haul, plus a margin — not to the once-a-year outlier.

Single vs tandem axle

Single-axle trailers are lighter, cheaper, and simpler, ideal up to around 3,000 lb of capacity. Tandem-axle (two axles) trailers carry more, tow more stably at highway speed, and are safer if a tire blows — but they weigh more and cost more. As a rule, light and local leans single-axle; heavy, frequent, or highway hauling leans tandem.

Always check the GVWR (the trailer's rated max weight) and subtract the trailer's own weight to get real payload. A '7K' trailer doesn't carry 7,000 lb of cargo — it carries 7,000 lb minus the empty trailer.

Used-by-owner vs new-with-delivery

Used trailers for sale by owner can be great value, but inspect the frame, floor, tires (by age, not just tread), lights, and coupler, and confirm the title. There's no warranty on a private sale. New trailers cost more but arrive with known condition, a clean title, and, with us, flat-rate freight anywhere in the contiguous USA.

Whichever you choose, confirm your hitch class, ball size, and whether you need a brake controller — a mismatch there is the most common day-one problem for new trailer owners.
